A┬áconstruction site contractor who generated dust during road repair works in Sai Kung was fined $13,000 by the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on 29 November for contravening the Air Pollution Control (Construction Dust) Regulation.

A spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) said, “During a surprise inspection on 30 December 2016, it was found that workers at a construction site were using a hand-held percussive breaker for road repair works near the Pak Tam Chung Holiday Camp. The contractor had not taken any precautionary measures to control the spread of dust, thus affecting users of the nearby holiday camp. Upon investigation and evidence gathering, the EPD subsequently prosecuted the main contractor of the construction site in accordance with the Regulation”.

The spokesman also said that “construction contractors must adopt effective measures to control the spread of dust when carrying out their works in accordance with the Regulation, for example by spraying water on the road surface. First-time offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $25,000”.
